Repair Versus Replace: When Welding Makes Sense
Replacing a radiator is not always the fast or cheap option people assume it is. For a common passenger car, a new radiator may be on the shelf. For a 1970s truck, a farm tractor, a generator, or an imported piece of equipment, the replacement can be discontinued, back-ordered for weeks, or priced high enough to make a weld the obvious choice. Welding also keeps the original, correct-fit part on the machine, which matters on older and specialty units where aftermarket radiators do not line up cleanly. The deciding factor is the condition of the metal, not the age of the vehicle. If the tanks and core are solid apart from the crack, welding restores it. If corrosion has thinned the whole core, we will steer you toward a recore or replacement instead.
How Our Radiator Welding Process Works
1. Assess and Clean
We inspect the crack or break and clean the metal thoroughly, because oil, coolant residue, or corrosion will keep a weld from holding.
2. Pressure Test for Every Leak
We pressure test to find all the failure points, not just the obvious crack. Welding one leak while missing another only sends the part back to us.
3. Weld or Solder
We match the method to the metal: TIG welding for aluminum, solder and weld for brass and copper.
4. Re-test and Verify
The repaired unit goes back under pressure to confirm the weld holds before it returns to the vehicle.
